Marriage Rates In U.S. At Historic Low


The recession has taken a toll on everything from unemployment to corporate profits to inflation. But according to a Census Bureau report, the recession is causing a precipitous drop in marriage rates amongst young adults aged 25 – 34.


Looking at the entire adult population, aged 18 and over, the proportion that was married dropped from 57 percent in 2000 to 52 percent in 2009. This marked the lowest percentage recorded since records first started being collected by the Census Bureau more than 100 years ago.

Cliff Braun and his fiancee Kacie Breault are amongst those people. They were supposed to get married next year, but they pushed the date back because they can't afford the soiree that they dreamed up.

"Time and money and the economy you know, it influenced it in every aspect possible and you know you just try to sit back and ride it out," said Cliff Braun.
