Father Jeff Nicolas, the rector at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville compared learning the new Mass translations to learning the Electric Slide in an article over at the Courier Journal by Peter Smith which reads in part.
Father Jeff Nicolas, whose sonorous voice reverberated through the high-vaulted cathedral, said the call-and-response chants reflect an extension of the goals stated in Vatican II-era documents — for the “fully conscious and active participation” of lay people in worship. A first step, he said, was the switch to English and the addition of congregational singing.
“Now, we’re not just singing at Mass, we’re singing Mass,” he said.
He said afterward that the first use of the new Roman Missal went “exactly as expected.”
“It was deep prayer,” he said. “It wasn’t perfect, but our prayer never is.”
He compared adapting to the new liturgy to learning a popular wedding-reception line dance.
“When I was first learning how to do ‘The Electric Slide,’ I had to look at my feet, and I had to watch other people,” he said. “But after a while, I got the steps down, and then I really entered into the dance. It’s the same thing.”
