The Pope’s new Swiss Guards

Twenty six new Swiss Guards took their oath of allegiance today in the Vatican. The ceremony takes place every year in memory of the heroic deaths of 147 Swiss soldiers who were killed defending the Pope in the Sack of Rome in 1527. The ceremony took place in the morning of  May 6, in San Damaso Courtyard of the Apostolic Palace. This year, the invitation was extended to guards from the Canton of Lucerne. Five of the six guards of Canton Ticino took their vows in Italian.
