Inside look at World Youth Day 2011 venues

It's no long before World Youth Day kicks off in the capital of Spain where preparations are underway to welcome the pope and more than one million young people from around the world for World Youth Day 2011.

Card. Antonio Maria Rouco Varela
Archbishop of Madrid (Spain)
“Right now we have registered more than 300,000 young people who are not Spanish and from this we can assume that in Madrid the number of non-Spanish young people will be over half a million.”

Yago de la Cierva
Executive Director, WYD Madrid 2011
“To the pilgrims from around the world coming to Madrid I would advise two things: bring sunscreen and sun gear, and we'll give you fluids to drink. And also to bring something to exchange with people from other countries.”

Javier Cremades
Organizer of Main Events, WYD Madrid 2011
“We have a particular interest, a particular emphasis on implementing the motto that the Holy Father has proposed for everyone for World Youth Day. That's to say, the main events converge with this beautiful motto of Saint Paul to the Colossians: 'Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.'”

The pope will arrive on Thursday August 18 in the afternoon at Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid, where he'll be welcomed by 50 young people. He'll then pass under the arc of this symbolic gate accompanied by 10 young people. There they will plant an olive tree as a reminder of the visit.

They will also be greeted with local flavors from the Spanish region of Andalusia.

Reyes Domecq
Ganaderías Domecq
“We'll be coming with our horses to welcome the Holy Father in the Puerta de Alcalá. I'll be going with my three brothers, mounted on Spanish horses and following will be three youngsters from our family, they'll be accompanied by three girls dressed in flamenco from the same group of young people in our family.”

The pope will travel in the popemobile for the short ride between the Puerta de Alcalá and the Plaza de Cibeles. This will kick off his official events for World Youth Day.

But the place where the pilgrims will spend the most time will be the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome, with 270 acres of land, equivalent to 48 soccer fields. The Saturday night vigil will be held there. Thousands of young people will sleep there to attend the closing Mass on Sunday.

Around the clock preparations are already underway here. What is now only a mass of metal will soon be a stage 600 feet in length and 65 in height. There will be 20,000 fences, 20 giant screens and 63 spotlights.

Javier Cremades
Organizer of Main Events, WYD Madrid 2011
“The final Mass on Sunday will be a celebration with 15,000 people, 14,000 priests and more than 1,000 bishops celebrating with the Holy Father. There will be 5,000 priests, 5,000 ministers distributing communion all over Cuatro Vientos.”

Benedict XVI will also have two special meetings in the famous monastery of El Escorial where the pope made two visits as a cardinal. One will be with young religious, because Spain is the country with the most nuns in the world, and the other will be with academics from around the world.

World Youth Day: Preparations heating up for fiesta in Madrid

Volunteer Lourdes Cortezon Hernandez leads a
meeting of World Youth Day volunteers
Catholic News Service:

With fewer than 100 days to go, preparations for World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid are heating up and organizers are promising a "fiesta," adding a Spanish flavor to the traditional opportunities for prayer, friendship, music and religious education.

As of May 7, organizers reported 347,965 youths had registered for the Aug. 16-21 event, which Pope Benedict XVI will attend. The figure included 22,488 young people from the United States and 5,439 from Canada. The Italians -- always a big contingent at World Youth Day -- were leading the pack with 65,196 registrants, outpacing even the Spaniards by more than 10,000.

While registering has benefits -- including priority seating at papal events -- young people seem to know they won't be turned away, and so an earlier estimate of 1.5 million participants seems to be right on track.

Father Eric Jacquinet, the official in charge of the youth section at the Pontifical Council for the Laity, the official sponsor of World Youth Day, said, "We can't predict how many will register at the last minute." At WYD Paris in 1997, he said, 300,000 young people pre-registered and there were 1.2 million people at the closing vigil and closing Mass with Pope John Paul II.

The staff of WYD Madrid has rallied interest and is helping prepare all those young people with a major presence on the Internet, especially through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Photos of the preparation phase are posted on Flickr and videos produced by or about WYD 2011 are collected on a special YouTube channel.

Organizers announced May 10 that the Madrid event will be the first World Youth Day with its own radio station and with a web-TV site.

Erika Rivera Palma, a spokeswoman for WYD '11, said the organization looked for 20,000 volunteers to help during the event. More than 30,000 people applied and the staff is still sifting through the applications to settle on 22,400 volunteers.

As of May 12, she said, the World Youth Day staff was 500 strong, and 80 percent of those workers were volunteers. Some were already in Madrid, but many were working from home on the website and Facebook pages.

That WYD Madrid has a strong presence in cyberspace -- a very interactive universe where comments are posted with ease -- may have something to do with the amount of criticism that has surrounded the official hymn for the Madrid gathering.

The anthem, with words by Auxiliary Bishop Cesar Franco of Madrid, was released in November. But when WYD organizers started feeling the burn of the online commentators, they opened a worldwide contest, soliciting songs -- not to replace the bishop's hymn, but to play alongside it.

Some 270 songs were submitted and 138 were deemed eligible, said Rivera. The public was being asked to go to a website -- www.madridmeencanta.org -- and vote for their favorites by May 31. A WYD panel was to take the top 25 vote-getters and choose five of them to feature in Madrid.

Hundreds of bands, choirs and soloists applied for an official performance slot at World Youth Day -- vying for an international stage, but no pay. Organizers chose 255 of them.

The first three afternoons, evenings and nights -- "evening" in Madrid would be considered "night" in many other parts of the world -- have been set aside for cultural activities, including the music and museum visits.

The mornings will be dedicated to religious education sessions, which take place in hundreds of locations and in dozens of languages. The teachers of the sessions are 250 bishops, who almost always leave plenty of time to dialogue with the youths.

Father Jacquinet said the pontifical council chooses the 250 bishops, usually based on those who have told the council they will attend WYD and are available. The final choice, he said, is based on language and country of origin -- "for example, we want to make sure the German speakers come not only from Germany, but also from Austria and Switzerland."

The council, he said, also takes into account that some bishops "have a special charisma" in addition to their teaching charism.

340,000+ signed up for World Youth Day in Madrid

Catholic News Agency:

Some 340,000 young people from more than 170 countries have signed up to participate in World Youth Day Madrid.

The main objective of the event, World Youth Day 2011's executive director said, is “so young people experience Madrid as a welcoming city and that their days here be unforgettable.”

Events are scheduled for Aug. 16 – 21 and include a vigil and Mass with Pope Benedict XVI.

The head of this year's World Youth Day, Yago de la Cierva, said the planning phase ended in January 2011. Since then, organizers have been working with the Vatican and Madrid city officials on implementing the plans. A large contingent of full and part-time volunteers were marshaled to manage logistics.

The culture and faith of Spain will be front and center the director added, emphasizing that “everything ought to be rooted in the 20 centuries of Catholic tradition in this country.”

World Youth Day will begin on Aug. 16 with an opening Mass followed by various events until Aug. 18, when Pope Benedict XVI will be welcomed at Cibeles Square.

The next day the Way of the Cross will be prayed and the weekend will be spent at the Cuatro Vientos airfield. A vigil will take place there on Saturday night and the closing Mass will be celebrated on Sunday morning.

Pope Benedict XVI will also meet with university professors, women religious, seminarians, volunteers, those with disabilities and the sick.

World Youth Day cultural activities will fill the streets of the Spanish capital, with more than 300 different stops available for young people.

The traditional catechetical sessions will take place Aug. 17 and 18 at more than 200 parishes throughout Madrid, led by bishops from around the world.

World Youth Day: 100 days and counting

ZENIT:

A new Pentecost is looming just over the horizon, with only 100 days till the World Youth Day in Madrid, says the cardinal archbishop of the host city.

Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela called the faithful of his archdiocese to the final leg of preparation in a note released Sunday. The Madrid World Youth Day is scheduled for Aug. 16-21.

"We have not failed to prepare ourselves and to dispose ourselves spiritually and pastorally so that Madrid's World Youth Day with the Holy Father, accompanied by bishops and presbyters from all the dioceses of the world, will again be the providential occasion for a profound, authentic and joyful encounter with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who calls young people in his Church so that their lives, often depressed and broken, and others fresh and vigorous, will be rooted and built up in him, the only one who can offer them and give them truth, hope and love," the cardinal said.

He pointed to expectation of a "new, beautiful and fruitful time of grace and of the Spirit for the Church and for young people; more than that, [...] a new 'Pentecost,' which will renew hearts."

The cardinal spoke of the "enormous evangelizing potential" of World Youth Day, born "from the singular apostolic charism of Blessed John Paul II, and designed pastorally by him."

An event was held Sunday to thank the volunteers for the work done thus far. The chorus and orchestra for World Youth Day also held its first public performance.

3 steps

Cardinal Rouco Varela urged the faithful of Madrid to prepare to welcome and support the flood of pilgrims. So far, some 340,000 pilgrims are registered, coming from 170 nations.

"No other attitude is fitting before them than that of fraternal love, lucid in its service and ready to give itself to a truly apostolic cause: that of the evangelization and sanctification of the young people of this time of the Church so full of missionary expectations and hopes that the Risen Lord Jesus Christ will triumph," he said.

A similar charity must be shown to "the visible Pastor of the universal Church, Pope Benedict XVI," he continued. "The Pope will arrive in Madrid in the name of the Lord to lead young people of the whole Church, pilgrims with their bishops and priests, in the World Youth Day, to a new and decisive encounter with Jesus Christ: 'their friend,' 'their Lord,' their Savior!"

Finally, the cardinal called on locals to themselves participate in the events.

"Let us," he said, "take profound advantage of the exceptional grace of this 'new Pentecost' of the young people of the world."

Spanish bishops invite youth to Madrid for World Youth Day 2011

From Catholic News Agency

Bishops from Spain recently addressed a message to young Catholics, inviting them to participate in World Youth Day 2011. The bishops said the youth celebration will be an authentic festival of faith and a chance to go on an interior pilgrimage towards Christ.

The bishops told the young people in their message that the Catholic Church has always looked to the youth “with hope and joy because you are the present, and above all, the future of society and of the Church.”

The message was released March 2 as the bishops concluded their 97th Plenary Assembly.

“We also, as your bishops, trust in you and consider you not only as recipients of the Gospel of Christ, but also as protagonists of the building of the Church and of her history,” they said.

The bishops recalled the theme of World Youth Day, “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith.” They then encouraged young people “to fortify and build up your faith, to deepen your roots in Christ, who loves you and calls you to friendship with Him.” The bishop added that Christ invites them “to follow Him in the priesthood, the consecrated life or in marriage to make of you His witnesses.”

The Spanish bishops also referred to the upcoming May 1 beatification of John Paul II. “The Pope of young people” always invited the youth to give themselves “completely to the love of God and of man and to lead a Christian life that is free of all mediocrity and if necessary, counter cultural in our times.

“How many times he invited you to be saints! He began the passionate endeavor of World Youth Day with all of you in mind,” the bishops said.

They encouraged young people to take advantage of the week-long event to pray personally and as a community. World Youth Day will thus be an authentic festival of faith that will highlight the crucial role Christians play in today’s world as “builders of peace, promoters of justice, and advocates of more humane world according to God’s plan,” they continued.

The bishops also urged the young people of Spain to welcome their brothers and sisters from around the world and to volunteer for the event.

World Youth Day 2011 will take place Aug. 16 – 21 in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

Listen to the pop version of "Firm in the Faith" the World Youth Day 2011 Hymn:

Lyrics in english:

Firmes en la fe, firmes en la fe!
We go forward in Christ, he's our companion and he is Lord!
Glory be to him!  Glory be to him!
We go forward in Christ, made stronger in our faith.
Your love, it builds us up and keeps us rooted,
Your cross, it gives us constant strength and courage,
Your flesh, it ever saves us and sustains us,
Your blood, it flows to cheer us and renew us.
Firmes en la fe…
Your hands, they hold us when we have been wounded,
Your eyes, they purify the way we see things,
Your lips, they speak to us words of forgiveness,
Your feet, they guide our steps to find life's fullness.
Firmes en la fe...
Your breath, it is the breeze that blows from heaven,
Your smile, it is the sign of grace and blessing,
Your precious wounds, they are love's burning embers,
Your sorrows are the price of our souls' ransom.
Firmes en la fe...
Your face is like an icon of life's fullness,
Your countenance is light from death returning,
Your death, it is the reason for my living,
The baptism of my flesh in your salvation.
Firmes en la fe...Your glory is our future, men and women
Who, aided by your grace, go forth together;
Your Church, a house which has a thousand doorways,
A house built on your rock, so firmly rooted.
Firmes en la fe...
We are the young, and Mary journeys with us,
And like a joyful bride she sings your praises;
With her we too shall sing and praise your triumph,
Because already death has been defeated.
Firmes en la fe...

John Paul II named patron of 2011 World Youth Day

from catholicnewsagency.com

The general coordinator of World Youth Day 2011 announced Jan 14 that John Paul II has been named patron of the upcoming youth event in Madrid, Spain.

The 2011 World Youth Day will be celebrated August 16-21.

The event's general coordinator, Auxiliary Bishop Cesar Franco of Madrid made the announcement shortly after Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, disclosed that John Paul II will be beatified on May 1.

Cardinal Rylko announced the beatification to the more than 400 representatives attending the International Meeting of Delegates meeting to prepare for World Youth Day. The representatives broke out in prolonged applause upon hearing the news.

The World Youth Day organizers emphasized that John Paul II always had a special affinity for young people. In 1985, when the first World Youth Day took place, the late-Pope said: “The entire Church ought to be ever more committed at the worldwide level to support young people in their anxieties and desires, in their openness and their hopes, in order to meet their expectations and communicate to them the certainty who is Christ.”

Delegates are meeting in Madrid this week to finalize details for the upcoming World Youth Day, including hospitality, transportation, visas, online information and other issues.

Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, told the delegates, “World Youth Day is not just another gathering, but rather an event that will be a vital experience for the thousands of young people coming from all over the world.”

He said officials would do everything possible “to make everyone feel at home and to make Madrid the best World Youth Day host city so far.”

World Youth Day organizers announce theme song

The hymn for World Youth Day 2011, titled “Firm in the Faith,” was released on Monday. Based on the words of St. Paul, its lyrics declare “we walk in Christ.”

The Youth Orchestra of the Community of Madrid and the Youth Choir of the Escolania de El Escorial participated in taping the Spanish-language hymn, which will be distributed starting Nov. 19. The release date coincides with the eve of the Feast of the Virgin of Almudena, the patron saint of Madrid.

The song’s seven verses, based on St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, are accompanied by a chorus which says:
“Firm in the faith, we walk in Christ,
Our Friend, Our Lord,
Glory always to Him! Glory always to Him!
We walk in Christ firm in the faith.”

Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid César Franco, general coordinator of World Youth Day (WYD), authored the lyrics. According to WYD organizers, he said the verses show “the humanity of Christ in the traditional Spanish mystical style, and aim to bring that humanity closer to the young people.”

Fr. Enrique Vázquez, a religious music composer, created the music. He said the first challenge was to invent a melody that would help pilgrims “understand, sing and pray the text.”

“The verses begin with a more lyrical character which reflect the amazement, admiration, and gratefulness to the person and work of Our Lord,” he explained.

The hymn has liturgical, popular and instrumental versions. The instrumental version is intended for large choirs, while the popular version may be accompanied by a guitar.

All three versions are available for free on the official WYD website. A multilingual music video of the hymn will be distributed in the future.
