As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter,
and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the
sea; they were fishermen. He said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers
of men.” At once they left their nets
and followed him.
—Matthew 4:18–20
Jesus calls these men to become fishers of men
because they are already fishers of fish. He calls
them to move to a deeper engagement with the
gifts and experience they already have. As always,
he draws our attention to the real world and
circumstances in which we live and work, and he
shows us how those circumstances might reflect
the glory of God, if we will only follow and trust.
We are not all fishermen. What gifts and
experience is Jesus calling forth in you?
How will you respond?
