The music that gets pumped into department stores is hardly ever noticed over the din of shoppers mulling about and cash registers ringing up sale after sale.
One arts foundation recently made sure the music being heard in a Philadelphia Macy's came through loud and clear.
The Knight Arts Foundation collaborated with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, setting up a flash mob that burst into Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" in what the foundation calls a "Random Act of Culture."
The foundation is helping produce 1,000 of these Random Acts of Culture over the next three years, with performances taking place in Akron, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Detroit, Mich.; Macon, Ga.; Miami, Fla.; Philadelphia, Pa.; San Jose, Calif.; and St. Paul, Minn.
