Zach Thomas, Briar Cliff junior, music education major from Council Bluffs, Iowa:
“Before I got to Briar Cliff, I didn't belong to any religion. My parents don't go to church. I actually came here and discovered faith. When I got here, I realized that something was missing. I would look at my friends and notice that they had something I didn't have and wanted that for myself. So I took it upon myself to explore the church and I found the Catholic Church had a lot of things that I agreed with, that appealed to me.”
Freshman roommate George Carmona started taking him to church services and events, a 30-hour fast, the Busy Persons and Antioch retreats. And he opened a Bible for the first time.
“Sometimes there was definitely a lot to learn, but I had a hunger for it.”
Last year, he experienced baptism, first communion and confirmation. This year, he is sponsoring another student on campus.
