When I was your age, the greatest honor a boy could have was to be an altar server. Yes, it was limited to boys back then, and we first had to memorize all of the responses and prayers the assembly says today—in Latin—and be at our assigned Mass (as early as 6 a.m.) in any weather. It was worth it! To assist the priest in preparations and to be that close to the altar when bread and wine are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ—How could it get any better without leaving our bodies behind and going to heaven?!
Today, girls can serve, too, and you don’t have to learn any Latin. If you’ve made your First Communion and can see over the top of the altar, you can go into the New Jerusalem with the priest. So why are we running out of servers at both Masses? I don’t get it. If you are interested in this great honor, talk to the sacristan at the Mass your family attends. God loves you and wants your love.
