A popular fast for Lent...give up Facebook

For Christians, Ash Wednesday starts a period of reflection and of sacrifice, usually involving a fast of some sort between now and Easter. And the decision about what to give up for lent has taken a 21st century twist.

Giving up social media Facebook, Twitter, and the like, has emerged as one of the more popular fasts for Lent.

It's something that's quickly become ingrained in our lives, and available in the palms of our hands.

Ann O'Connell gave up Facebook for Lent last year. "When I tried to think about something that I truly overindulged in all the time, the only thing that really came to mind was Facebook. I spent an awful lot of time on there."

Lent lasts 40 days and ends on Easter Sunday
