Social Justice Issues

Congress has still failed to pass a budget. The House has passed a budget that the Catholic Conference of Kentucky warns us has impacted the poor (for example, community health centers) to a disproportionate degree. Our bishops and Catholic Charities ask us to contact our Senators, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, and ask that the Senate use the principle of shared sacrifice in cutting the budget instead of this disproportionate sacrifice by the poor.

On the state level, Senate Bill 9, which would have required ultrasounds before abortions are performed, was killed in a House committee on a straight party-line vote. The Catholic Conference of Kentucky had asked the House leadership to stop assigning pro-life bills to a hostile committee, but the practice continues. In “Faithful Citizenship,” America’s bishops warned us that to vote for a pro-abortion candidate out of party preference or narrow economic interests is a grave evil.
