Special Note for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God:
Since January 1 falls on a Saturday, this is not a holy day of obligation this year. The 5:00 PM Saturday Mass is the Vigil Mass for the Feast of the Epiphany.
January 1, the eighth day of Christmas, once was a day we observed the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus. However, following Vatican II, Pope Paul VI decided to change the feast of Jesus' Circumcision to the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God to reclaim the ancient Western Marian emphasis at the end of the Octave of Christmas.
The Epiphany is a holy day of obligation on January 6 in most of the world, but is transferred to Sunday in the United States.
