Wednesday, March 9, begins the solemn season of Lent.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fast (one full meal and no eating between meals for those between 19 and 60) and abstinence from the meat of warm-blooded animals (for all Catholics beginning at age 16).
Our Mass on Wednesday is at 7:00 p.m. All are required to observe the usual one-hour fast if receiving Communion.
Those working Wednesday evening may go to the 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Francis Xavier on this special day of penance.
Abstinence from meat is also required on all Fridays of Lent, so our young people in public schools and adults in the workplace can witness to their Faith by choosing the non-meat entrée.
For Scripture Students: If you’ve not yet read Pope Benedict’s book "Jesus of Nazareth", now may be a good time since the second part will be out in a few weeks. This is great Lenten reading to help us understand the Holy Bible.
iConfession: If you use an iphone, ipod, or ipad, this is a useful ap that’s available. No, it doesn’t take the place of going to a priest, but it helps you to prepare for confession with a good examination of conscience. You may want to give it a try before your Lenten reconciliation.
Family Faith Formation: On the table near the loft stairs, you’ll find free stuff to help with your Lenten journey, including daily devotionals from the “Little Black Book” and Catholic Update, the March issue of At Home with Our Faith, the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl, and other activities and reading materials. Help yourself!
